Mental Skills Training

What is Mental Skills Training?
Mental Skills Training involves the teaching and development of various psychological factors such as confidence, positive thinking, motivation, mindfulness, and attentional focus. The aim of mental skills training is to better help performers overcome mental barriers that prevent them from performing up to their peak potential. Developing these skills are essential to helping individuals perform at their highest level and separating themselves from their competitors. However, like physical training, learning mental skills takes plenty of practice and repetition.
Why Is It Needed?
Much research has shown the benefits of developing these psychological skills on athletic performance. For example,  athletes and performers who report higher levels of confidence are more likely to perform better. Athletes and performers might be in prime physical shape, but if they are unable to overcome mental barriers they will not reach their peak potential. Your mindset has a major impact on your performance.
Think about your sport or event, how much of it is mental? The popular cliché "Sports are 90% mental and 10% physical" is mostly true. Performing does require a major mental component that is often ignored by coaches. Learning and becoming proficient with mental skills training can help to give athletes and performers a mental edge when competing.
